NIH Grant Awarded to the NYU College of Dentistry

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, part of the NIH, has awarded a two-year, $245,000 grant to a New York University dental research team to identify bacteria in the oral cavity that may be associated with oral cancer. The team will collaborate with researchers at the NYU School of Medicine and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The principal investigator, Dr. Deepak Saxena, an Assistant Professor of Basic Science & Craniofacial Biology at the NYU College of Dentistry (NYUCD), said that the pilot study will compare the bacterial profiles of healthy, premalignant, and malignant oral tissue. Samples will be collected from 35 patients at NYUCD and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Oral Health America's Board of Directors Elects New Officers

November 5, 2010, Chicago, IL— Oral Health America’s Board of Directors recently elected three members into new officer roles.  The board members and their new positions are: Keith Suchy, DDS, Drs. Sullivan & Suchy, LTD, Chair of the Board; Margaret S. Cottrell, President, ConFirm Monitoring Systems, Inc., Vice Chair; and Steven J. Pollock, President, DentaQuest, Secretary/Treasurer. Each officer will serve a two-year term, beginning in February 2011.

The Pankey Institute Welcomes Dr. James C. Kessler, Chairman of Edu.

On October 1, 2010, Dr. James C. Kessler, previous Chair of the Division of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, assumed responsibility for the Department of Education at The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education in Key Biscayne, Florida.  Dr. Kessler replaces Dr. Irwin M. Becker as Chairman of Education.

“We are very excited to have attracted such a high caliber educator with extensive experience in continuing postgraduate education,” says Dr. Barry S. Segal, Chairman of the L. D. Pankey Dental Foundation. “Not only do we get a top lecturer at the height of his career but also an expert clinician who has a passion for private practice. Dentist Provides Dental Care in Afghanistan

For the past eight years, Santa Barbara, California dentist Dr. James G. Rolfe has improved the lives of the Afghan people through his organization, the Afghanistan Dental Relief Project. Dental care conditions in Afghanistan are severely compromised with only 134 dentists to serve a population of 27 million. Sterilization practices are lax and untreated dental conditions resulting in death are not unheard of.
Dr. Rolfe established his organization to provide dental treatment facilities in underserved areas of Afghanistan, to staff these facilities with volunteers and to train the Afghan people in dentistry.
