Extraoral Device Scans Traditional Impressions

The cara Scan 4.0i extraoral scanner from Heraeus Kulzer bridges the gap between traditional impressions and digital dentistry by implementing impression scanning and automated processing right in the dental office.

Users place the traditionally taken impression--whether it's triple tray or single or double full arch tray--into the scanner. The unit digitizes the impression and generates a detailed 3-D file format. According to the company, this process accelerates restorations since impression transportation and fabrication of gypsum models aren't mandatory.

Additionally, the cara Scan 4.0i aims to improve efficiency by eliminating the need for training and the complexity of intraoral scanning. It heightens the precision of indirect restorations compared to the model scan, Heraeus Kulzer states, while offering the opportunity to enlarge the base of digital documentation.

The cara Scan 4.0i also enables real-time collaboration between the dentist and the dental technician, shortening the coordination process and making cooperation much easier, the company reports. Plus, the pre-installed teamviewer enables laboratory partners to promptly comment on critical impression situations should the need arise.

Furthermore, users get Kulzer Koncierge, which includes customer service, installation of the scanner by a Kulzer technical consultant, training and support, and consultancy with dental technician partners and Kulzer Technical Service.

Heraeus Kulzer also offers the A-silicone Flexitime Fast & Scan scannable impression material. It provides higher precision and detail without thanks to the cara Scan 4.0i's direct scanning without the need for powder, the company states. Its flexible working time ranges from 30 seconds to a minute and a half with a reduced intraoral setting time of 2 minutes designed for greater patient comfort.
