Illinois will change the levels of fluoridation throughout the state.
Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation, which is supported by the Illinois State Dental Society, that will put fluoride levels in community water supplies at the same level as new federal recommendations for what the optimal level is.
The recommended fluoridation level was in the range of 0.7 to 1.2 parts per millions for decades. An Illinois statue earlier said that the minimum level needed to be at 0.9 ppm. Evidence from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services now suggests that the minimum level should be 0.7 ppm.
Fluoridated water is one of the oral health benefits that Americans receive. Since good oral health leads to good overall health, it’s important for the people to consume the water with the correct fluoride levels. And now that will continue in Illinois.
