The number of fluoride varnish treatments in increasing.

According to research by the National Health Service in the United Kingdom, there was a 55 percent increase in the amount of fluoride varnish treatments involving young people from 2010 to 2011. For adults, that number jumped up 22 percent.

The goal of fluoride varnish is to protect the teeth while improving the teeth’s strength. Dentists are using fluoride varnish more and more as a way to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride varnish is a way to provide patients with fluoride without relying on the fluoride people receive from basic tap water in many communities.

Fluoride varnish is a preventive treatment that may cost more now but it will enable people to save money in the future because their teeth will be in better condition.

Dentists paint the fluoride gel over the teeth and the gel eventually hardens to provide added protection for the teeth. Varnish treatments can be repeated roughly once every six months.
