The Minnesota Dental Association wants people to know how important their oral health is. That’s why they’re launching the “Healthy Gums, Healthy You” campaign to get the word out about the importance of maintaining good oral health.

The reason for the campaign stems from the evidence-based connection between good oral health leading to good overall health. The campaign explains how good oral health can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and pregnancy complications.

The campaign also makes sure people are aware of the proper measures to take to keep their gums healthy throughout their life. People can also analyze their risk for gum problems from an online risk assessment tool associated with the campaign.

Gum disease stems from the plaque that forms on teeth and then begins to bother the gums. Gum tissues can weaken if the plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing on a regular basis.

If the gums are not taken care of properly, they may bleed or recede from the teeth. The problem with bleeding gums is that it opens the possibility of bacteria entering the blood stream and possibly connecting to blood vessels. The result is then an increased risk of heart disease, artery blockage or other problems. Gum disease is also a major problem stemming from diabetes and it could lead to pregnancy problems.

According to the Minnesota Dental Association, the best ways to maintain good oral health are to brush twice daily, clean between teeth with dental floss daily or a similar type of cleaner, visit the dentist frequently and tell your dentist about any major changes involving your health.
