Acknowledged as the father of aesthetic dentistry by New York University and his peers, Dr. Smigel is the founder and current president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics and founder and director of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry. He is also regent of the International Academy for Dental Facial Aesthetics. He maintains a full-time practice devoted to aesthetic dentistry in New York City and is the creator of the Supersmile tooth whitening system. In June 2009 the National Museum of Dentistry, a branch of the Smithsonian, presented Dr. Smigel with the Smithsonian award for his achievements in aesthetic dentistry. It was the first Smithsonian award presented to a dentist in 50 years. Dr. Smigel has been instrumental in the establishment of aesthetic sciences in Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, Turkey, and Israel. The New York University College of Dentistry had established the Irwin Smigel Prize in Aesthetic Dentistry, which recognizes significant achievements and contributions to the art and science of aesthetic dentistry on a global level every 2 years; the dentist acknowledged as outstanding in the worldwide field of aesthetic dentistry receives the “Irwin Smigel Prize.” He has written more than 150 articles on aesthetic dentistry and is the author of Dental Health, Dental Beauty and the forthcoming Saving Face.
