Services will be held for Dr. Edward M. Mayer, DDS, 87, who died on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. He was a past president of the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry.

Dr. Mayer was a graduate of St. Vincent College of Latrobe, PA, and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry, where he was elected to the Omicron Kappa Epsilon Honorary Dental Society. Also, he was a naval dental officer serving aboard the USS Chourre during the Korean War.

In addition to his tenure with the NJ State Board of Dentistry, Dr. Mayer had a practice in Mountainside, NJ. He was a member of the International Pierre Fauchard Academy and the American, National, New Jersey State, and Union County Dental Societies.

Dr. Mayer also served on the NJ State Dental Board Professional Review Committee and was a fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentistry. He was an interviewer for the Georgetown University Admissions Program and the Union High School Dental Assistant Training Advisory Committee.

Additionally, he was a member of the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners and the American Association of Dental Examiners, and he was the Dental Examiner for the Union Township Board of Education in New Jersey.

Outside of the profession, Dr. Mayer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Two Hundred Club of Union County, and the Union Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past director of the Union Boys Club as well.

Services will be Monday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Dooley Colonial Home in Westfield, NJ. Mass will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes, Mountainside, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Heart Association or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Dr. Mayer is survived by his wife, the former Dolores Bauer; his children, Edward, Elizabeth, Debra, and John; his brothers, Raymond and Joseph; and 9 grandchildren.
