The market for dental lasers will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4% from 2014 to 2019, according to MicroMarket Monitor, driven by advances in technology. For example, many new models rely on modern fiber-optic delivery. Also, laser systems that once were bulky now are small and portable. Some lasers are even available in form factors that resemble traditional handpieces.

Applications include caries diagnosis and management, restorative dentistry, oral diagnosis and medicine, periodontics, frenectomies, endodontics, biostimulation, and, most significantly, surgery. Dental lasers eliminate the need for handpieces, drills, and anesthetics. They ensure less bleeding at the surgery site and less trauma for an overall positive patient experience. They also eliminate most of the tedious stages of surgery, reducing procedural time and operating costs.

Changing demographics are influencing the market too. The middle class population is growing and getting older, with more disposable income. There’s also greater awareness of oral hygiene and facial aesthetics, with rising demand for cosmetic dentistry. A lack of proper reimbursement factors, though, inhibits the market.

Key players in the industry include AMD Lasers, BIOLASE, Fotona DD, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Danaher, Sirona, Syneron Dental, Zolartek, CAO Group Inc., and the Yoshida Dental Mfg. Co. Ltd. Laser companies are growing primarily via new product launches and by mergers and acquisitions. For instance, Danaher acquired Nobel Biocare Holding to expand its presence in the global dental market.

At 40.0%, North America accounts for the largest share of the total dental lasers market, with a 9.2% CAGR expected through 2019. Europe holds the next largest share, with an anticipated CAGR of 8.7%.
