Removing Amalgam: Intermediate-Speed Dentistry With Electric Handpieces

The old way of “blasting” amalgam out of a restoration—sectioning the amalgam using an air-driven handpiece at speeds of greater than 300,000 rpm, then scooping out what is remaining—is now no longer necessary. Using such a slow speed is not only a much more effective approach, but also a much sounder approach of reducing postoperative sensitivity by minimally impacting the adjacent, healthy tooth structure.

Even the best high-speed, air-driven handpieces produce vibration, which can cause postoperative pain on sensitive tooth structure such as dentin.
