Colgate’s sonic Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1 uses real-time sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms to detect brushing effectiveness in 16 zones of the mouth and provide feedback and tips via Bluetooth connectivity so users can take better care of their oral health. With the user’s permission, it also uses the Apple ResearchKit to collect and crowdsource this data for use in developing future innovations.

“Our goal is simple. We want people to have their healthiest smiles by brushing their best,” said Dr. Patricia Verduin, chief technology officer of the Colgate-Palmolive Company. “The first step to improving brushing is to understand consumers’ brushing habits, and Apple ResearchKit has proved to be a powerful tool for this.”

Integrated with the Apple ResearchKit, the Colgate Connect app’s 3-D brushing coach creates an enjoyable oral care routine while encouraging better brushing habits. Its Go Pirate feature turns the brush into a game controller, played on the paired mobile device, to motivate kids to brush as well. Its family mode keeps track of how well everyone in the house is brushing. And, the E1 records offline brushing sessions to sync later.

The E1’s rechargeable battery provides 10 days of brushing. Powered by Kolibree, it is now available for $99.95 in the United States exclusively at apple.com and in select Apple Stores. A three-pack of replacement brush heads costs $19.
