This issue brings to close yet another amazing year for the dental profession! It was also a productive and rewarding year for our team in our mission to provide our loyal readers with 12 more informative issues of North America’s leading clinical news magazine, Dentistry Today. As usual, with our 21st Annual Leaders in Continuing Education issue, we celebrate the end of 2018, and the beginning of 2019, by honoring a distinguished group of lecturers and consultants. These leaders are actively serving the profession by teaching and mentoring others on the practice and/or the business of dentistry. You will find them present in various venues, including publications in print and online, at dental and industry meetings, at universities, in webinars, and in private teaching centers where the attendees can learn in lectures and also take post-graduate hands-on courses. These individuals (and many other deserved and dedicated leaders not named herein), make a significant contribution to keeping the profession educated and updated—an especially important task with all the changes occurring in dentistry!
Having just attended 3 recent meetings (the American Dental Association, the American Society for Dental Aesthetics Annual Meeting, and the Greater New York Dental Meeting), my Dentistry Today team and I can report that we are in for some exponential change in how dentistry will soon be practiced and delivered, as measured in a few short years, not decades. It was a real eye-opening experience in these past few months to see what is happening due to advances with artificial intelligence, fast-evolving printing technologies and associated materials, advanced smile design and restorative/functional treatment planning driven by new virtual applications with fully integrated software and fabrication programs, and the coming of surreal robotic innovations that will allow for patient procedures to be done more accurately and minimally invasively than human eyes and hands can execute. Take a deep breath because, just as Bachman-Turner Overdrive so aptly put it in 1974, “B-b-b-baby, you ain’t seen n-n-n-nothin’ yet!”
