Each February, Dentistry Today has traditionally focused on “new directions,” and this year is no exception. This particular overall topic emphasis is deliberately placed in the same month as one of the most well-attended dental meetings in the country, the Chicago Dental Society’s 154th Midwinter Meeting. It is no coincidence that, at this major and strategically located dental meeting in North America, manufacturers find the event to be a natural fit for the introduction of any new products and innovative techniques. With this in mind, it should be no real surprise to learn that several of the clinical articles featured in this issue are dealing with the introduction of revolutionary products.
This month, we have an excellent lineup of articles by some of the nation’s top clinical authors. Leading off, in the spotlight as our cover-featured author is Dr. Peter Auster, who presents a series of mini case reports that showcase a revolutionary advancement in composite resin chemistry. He describes the composite and its potential to be a game-changer for the restorative dentist as an “omnichromatic composite resin-based material that will match any tooth, any shade, on any patient.” Dr. Elizabeth Bakeman talks about how and why she has integrated the use of a newly formulated long-term bisacryl chairside provisional material designed for a number of indications into her practice. Dr. Carla Cohn outlines her rationale for the use of glass ionomers and silver diamine fluoride—materials that have become invaluable tools for treating children. Also, among other interesting clinical articles, Dr. Michael Scherer, in our Implants Today section, shows how he combines the latest technologies (intraoral scanning, digital design, 3-D printing, milling, and selected abutment systems) to allow for the simplification of surgical and restorative full-arch clinical procedures.
