Surfaces Improve Implant Treatment Outcomes

Nobel Biocare’s Xeal and TiUltra surfaces are designed to be applied to implants as well as abutments to optimize tissue integration at every level and improve implant treatment outcomes.

Different tissues require different surfaces for optimal integration of dental implant restorations, the company reports. While osseointegration is fundamental for long-term function, soft-tissue integration often is overlooked. Yet dense soft-tissue contact with the abutment can act as a barrier to protect the underlying bone, Nobel Biocare says.

To maintain long-term tissue health and stability, the surface chemistry and topography of the Xeal abutment was designed to facilitate soft-tissue attachment. The Xeal surface has demonstrated a significant increase in soft-tissue height compared to machined abutment surfaces, according to the company. It is available for the On1 Base and Multi-unit Abutment, also from Nobel Biocare.

The ultra-hydrophilic and multi-zone TiUltra implant surface was developed for early osseointegration and long-term bone stability. Its surface chemistry was optimized to positively influence its interaction with cells and, ultimately, osseointegration. Its topography also has been reimagined to gradually change from a minimally rough and non-porous collar to a moderately rough and porous implant apex, respecting the natural transition from hard, dense cortical bone to cancellous bone. It will be available with the NobelActive and NobelParallel Conical Connection implants.

Combined with the Xeal abutment surface, the TiUltra surface gives dental professionals a complete solution for soft-tissue health, bone protection, and fast osseointegration, Nobel Biocare says. To ensure that every implant and abutment is delivered in pristine condition, the surface chemistry and hydrophilicity of both Xeal and TiUltra is preserved with a protective layer that dissolves upon contact with fluids. Dental professionals in CE markets will be the first to get access to the new surfaces in April, followed by other regions around the world.
