I was conducting research on bone growth at Columbia University Medical School, and an orthodontist at the laboratory got me excited about a career in dentistry. His calming demeanor and dedication to his work impressed me, and the rest is history.
With almost 30 years of practice, I continue to be amazed and overwhelmed by technology and how it has changed my life, the way I practice, and how I treat patients. I utilize many of these new advances every day in my office. Intraoral video cameras and digital radiography have been a mainstay in my office for over 20 years, albeit systems have now become more predictable and superior. With the advent of scanning, CAD/CAM, and printing, what was unthinkable several years ago has now become routine: more options with better outcomes. All of my patients have benefited from these advances. This is an exciting time to be in dentistry!
I would have to say the major factor that has made my practice successful has been my involvement in organized dentistry and the support of mentors in my clinical career. Through these associations, I had the pleasure and honor to be president of the Academy of Osseointegration and New York County Dental Society. Currently, I am the chairman-elect of the Greater New York Dental Meeting, the largest dental meeting in the United States. I look forward to greeting all the subscribers of Dentistry Today at this year’s meeting, which begins the day after Thanksgiving at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
