The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) has awarded its 2020 Distinguished Scientist Award for Research in Periodontal Disease to Anton Sculean, DMD, MS, PhD, past president of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and scientific chair of the recent Perio Master Clinic 2020.
The award recognized Sculean’s “significant contribution to the field of oral-health research,” the EFP said. It includes a monetary prize to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding achievements in research and its translation in periodontal disease. It also is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR, the EFP added, and supported by Colgate-Palmolive.
Sculean, who was EFP president in 2018 and 2019, is professor and chair of the Department of Periodontology and executive director of the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Bern in Switzerland.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, and his postgraduate training in periodontology at the University of Munster, Germany, and the Royal Dental College in Aarhus, Denmark. He completed his PhD at the University of Saarland in Homburg, Germany, as well.
Sculean has written more than 370 peer-reviewed scientific articles on periodontal research and related fields. His work focuses on preclinical and clinical research related to periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-aesthetic periodontal therapy, and the use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in treating periodontal and peri-implant infections.
“I was deeply honored and humbled but at the same time extremely delighted to receive the news from the IADR central office,” said Sculean.
“However, in my eyes this award represents the recognition of the work of our team in Bern and also our long-lasting collaboration with outstanding colleagues and friends from various institutions in Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, German, Romania, UK, USA, Canada, China, Italy, and Japan, because research today is impossible to be accomplished without a global and inclusive spirit encompassing a great team of highly qualified and motivated people,” he said.
Sculean also received the IADR Periodontal Research Group Anthony Rizzo Award in 2004 and the IADR/Periodontal Research Group Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine in 2012. He was president of the IADR Periodontal Research Group from 2009 to 2010, of the Swiss Society of Periodontology from 2012 to 2016, and of the EFP from 2018 to 2019.
