Carestream Dental has partnered with Howard University to provide innovative digital solutions to its College of Dentistry, according to the company. With an in-kind gift of technology valued at $430,000, the partnership was designed to arm students and fellows with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed as it pertains to digital technology to deliver the best care when they start practicing, Carestream said.

Carestream Dental also is supporting the Howard University Hospital (HUH) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Post-Doctoral Program and General Dentistry Practice Residency Program. The new 3D CBCT systems will equip the hospital’s dental department with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment imaging capabilities, the company said. This technology places HUH at the forefront of providing advanced surgical and facial reconstructive services, the company said.

“When we partner with universities, we know we’re investing in the future of the industry,” said Lisa Ashby, CEO of Carestream Dental. “But this partnership with Howard is different. This is more than an investment in the future of dentistry. It’s an investment in young, diverse talent, both doctors and STEM students, and supporting Howard’s mission in improving access for underserved populations. There’s no better return on investment than that.”

It doesn’t stop with dental students, said Carestream Dental, which also plans to source Howard business and technical talent through internships in various departments and include students, alumni, and professors in product innovation. Both organizations also said they will support each other by sharing speakers on a wide variety of topics.

“We are excited about our partnership with Carestream Dental, and we are thankful for their generous contribution of this advanced digital technology,” said Andrea D. Jackson, dean of the College of Dentistry. “The partnership is a great opportunity for our students and will be for years to come.”

Howard University’s College of Dentistry is the fifth oldest dental school in the United States and graduates approximately 75 students each year. It serves as a research institution that prides itself on being a national resource for dental leaders, the school said.

“Howard University’s leadership team, especially its president, Dr. Wayne Frederick, made this partnership a natural fit,” Ashby said. “I admire Dr. Frederick’s commitment to changing the underrepresentation of African Americans in healthcare and, as one of the few women running a multinational medical device and software company, his passion regarding gender equality also resonates deeply.”
