Four members of the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) have earned the AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry.

The certification program enables members to demonstrate their comprehensive education and clinical experience as well as expand their core knowledge in implant dentistry, the AO said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AO had to cancel its 2020 Annual Meeting. Members who qualified for the certificate last year and this year were recently recognized. They include:

  • Yuen Lok Loretta Ching, BDS, MSD, an assistant clinical professor, Department of General Dentistry, School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University.
  • Jorge Mauricio Hervas, DDS, MS, a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, a 16-year member of the AO, a private practitioner, and a member of the faculty at Nova Southern University
  • Robert H. Sattler, DMD, a general practitioner in private family practice in Southampton, Pennsylvania, as well as a graduate of the Temple University School of Dentistry and a 20-year member of the AO
  • Amerian D. Sones, DMD, MS, a prosthodontist, vice president of the AO Board of Directors, director of the Department of Continuing Education at Texas A&M University, and graduate of the UCLA School of Dentistry

“Achieving the AO Certificate in Implant Dentistry is a great honor to me,” said Ching. “It is an important recognition and continuous reminder that I must strive to keep up my work and aim at becoming a better implantologist.”

“Achieving this special award is especially meaningful to me as a longtime member and leader of the Academy, as it clearly challenged me to bring my very best,” said Sones, who also serves as the Global University Task Force Lead and has been the main driver of the AO’s certificate program since its inception at the organization’s 2016 Annual Meeting.

“The four required clinical cases comprehensively questioned my knowledge and skill in dental implant treatment planning,” Sones said. “I found it to be much more demanding and time consuming than I originally anticipated. However, the effort devoted to applying was so worthwhile on a personal level.”
