Benevis, a leading dental healthcare and orthodontics delivery organization committed to providing quality care to underserved communities, joins its oral health industry peers in recognizing February’s Gum Disease Awareness Month, a global effort to raise public awareness and promote prevention measures for the disease. The prevalence of periodontal disease affects 42% of the U.S. population, and individuals with the condition have a higher risk of severe health issues, such as heart attacks or strokes. Benevis aims to reverse this impact while encouraging patients to take an active role in their oral healthcare through daily hygiene, regular dental visits, early diagnosis, and treatment.

Gum disease, also known as gingivitis and periodontitis, is an infection of the gums typically caused by poor oral hygiene. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 47% of adults aged 30 and older have some form of periodontal disease, with the rate increasing to 70% for those 65 and older. Among children, approximately 50% develop periodontal disease due to plaque and bacteria buildup on the teeth and gums. Many individuals can live with gum disease for years without noticing symptoms; however, the long-term consequences of untreated conditions—ranging from tooth loss to chronic health issues—can be severe. While all patients with gum disease are at risk for developing health complications, 60% of individuals living below the poverty level or those with diabetes are more likely to develop periodontal disease.

The most common form of gum disease, gingivitis, is the mildest, characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily. The condition is both preventable and reversible with proper oral hygiene, including brushing twice daily, flossing, and regular professional dental care. Periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease, involves bone loss around the teeth and is the leading cause of tooth loss. Although more severe, its long-term effects can be managed and slowed with professional dental care. Consistent dental screenings and proper oral hygiene are more critical than ever, as gum disease has been linked to diabetes and cardiovascular health issues.

“Gum disease is one of the most prevalent oral health issues, and it only becomes more common with age. Risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, genetics, and socioeconomic conditions increase the likelihood of developing the disease, but proper preventive dental care can have a profound impact on keeping the condition at bay,” said Dr. Dale Mayfield, DDS, chief dental officer for Benevis. “During Gum Disease Awareness Month, Benevis is shining a light on the prevalence of this condition and reinforcing our commitment to connecting underserved patients with essential oral health resources to ensure gum health throughout their lives.”

Benevis remains dedicated to its mission of improving patients’ lives by reshaping the dental health landscape in the U.S. During its 1.4 million patient visits each year, Benevis dental professionals provide preventive care to minimize the risk of gum disease, conduct screenings to detect early stages of the condition, and offer treatment to reduce long-term oral health complications. By delivering high-quality care to approximately five million children and adults, Benevis care teams strive to educate patients on the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene habits and seeking routine cleanings.
