ATLANTA – Carestream Dental announced its CS 8100 digital panoramic imaging system has been selected as the Bronze Winner in the Dental Instruments, Equipment, and Supplies category of the 2013 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition. Presented by UBM Canon and Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry (MD+DI) magazine, the MDEA program is the MedTech Industry’s Premier Competition for medical device design and innovation. It recognizes the achievements of medical device manufacturers, their suppliers, and the many people behind the scenes (engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians) in the areas of product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery.
The CS 8100 digital panoramic imaging system offers the latest imaging technology to obtain highly detailed and optimally contrasted panoramic images. The CS 8100 also comes with exclusive 2D+ technology that enables practitioners to create slices at regular intervals along the jaw to focus on one area of interest and visualize more details than standard 2D images reveal. It’s a cost-effective solution that overcomes some of the limitations of standard panoramic imaging such as structure overlap.
The patient-centric design and transparent patient support features of the CS 8100 also help practitioners obtain high-quality images effortlessly. Integrated handgrips help patients remain stationary, while the face-to-face positioning aids with patient alignment. Images are captured in as little as 10 seconds, reducing the period of exposure while also minimizing the risk of patient movement and need for retakes. The CS 8100’s open design accommodates patients of all shapes and sizes, including those in wheelchairs.
“The CS 8100 is the ideal blend of simplicity, efficiency and affordability, and would be a great addition to any practice,” said Edward Shellard, D.M.D., chief marketing officer and director of business development for Carestream Dental. “We’re so proud of the CS 8100 and the awards and recognitions it has received in less than a year on the market – it’s an incredible accomplishment and well-deserved by our product team.”
A comprehensive review of the entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, clinical practice, diagnostics, human factors, industrial design, manufacturing, and medicine. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices, and features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient. The 2013 MDEA Jury selected 27 winning products out of 46 finalists in 10 medical product categories.
“We are incredibly proud to celebrate a long tradition of innovation and design in medical device products,” stated Heather Thompson, Editor-in-Chief, MD+DI. “This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the MDEA awards, which have honored more than 500 groundbreaking products since the program’s inception in 1998.”
In addition to the Medical Design Excellence Award, the CS 8100 has also been recognized with four other awards this year:
· The U.S. DrBicuspid Dental Excellence Award for Best New Diagnostic/Imaging Device
· The international red dot award: product design
· The Polish Krakdent Medal of Highest Quality
· The Clinical Innovations India award
