Mother of 6-Year-Old Victim Wants Answers

Here is a statement we recieved Friday afternoon from Virginia Commonwealth University regarding the death of a 6-year-old boy who died Tuesday after a dental procedure at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Pediatric Dental Clinic.

“VCU wants to understand what happened in connection with the tragic event involving a pediatric patient. Our internal investigation continues, and we are awaiting the results of the autopsy conducted by the Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner. We have been in contact with the patient’s family, and we will continue to be available to them. VCU complies with requirements governing the administration of general anesthesia during dental procedures, and professional emergency care is immediately available in our dental clinics and facilities.”

The mother of a 6-year-old who died after a dental procedure says all she wants are answers.

Crystal Lewis says she was told her six year old son, Jacobi Hill, went into cardiac arrest while she was waiting on him during a visit to the VCU Pediatric Dental Clinic.

Hill died a short time later at VCU Medical Center.

This morning, Crystal Lewis told CBS 6 Senior Reporter Wayne Covil that so far, she hasn’t gotten any answers, either from VCU Medical Center or from the Pediatric Dental Clinic.

Lewis says up until yesterday, she and her family had never experienced any problems at the clinic.

In fact, Lewis says her oldest son, Keyon Hill, had had the same procedure and did not have any problems. That’s why she was confident the results would be the same with Jacobi.

VCU Medical Center issued a statement late Tuesday, which they said Wednesday they continue to stand by “We are investigating an unfortunate incident that happened today when a pediatric patient in the dental clinic needed to be taken to the emergency department. An internal investigation is underway to determine what happened.”

The family says they plan an autopsy in hopes it will answer some questions.

Funeral arrangements are still being worked out.
