The Chicago Foundation for Women honored Dr. Sheela Raja, Assistant Professor, Pediatric Dentistry, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, at its ninth annual Breaking Barriers Awards, an event honoring Asian American women who are transforming health and wellness, on May 8.

The annual awards honor Asian and Asian American women leaders in the metropolitan Chicago area who have made an outstanding and lasting impact in their fields. The ten honorees have had an impact on health and wellness in numerous ways, as providers, advocates, policymakers, researchers, scientists, and community educators.

The awards were presented by Chicago Foundation for Women’s Asian American Leadership Council. All event proceeds will benefit the council’s Silk Fund, which provides grants to various community service organizations.

“I have a commitment to making psychology accessible,” Dr. Raja said. “I really like working with healthcare providers–breaking down evidence-based psychology into useful, pragmatic suggestions that providers can use in their everyday practice.  I also think they are recognizing the media work I do–being quoted in magazines and doing segments for local TV.  I’m very excited about the award.”
