The FDI World Dental Federation is partnering with Sunstar to produce a guideline on managing patients with oral cancer and on oral cancer prevention. Designed to serve as a tool for oral cancer risk assessment in dental practices, the guideline will be released at the FDI World Dental Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 5 to September 8, 2018.

“Sunstar has been a longtime supporter of FDI’s work, and I’m delighted to have them on board for this project. Oral cancer is a disease with high mortality, so understanding treatment options for patients is crucial to improving survival rates,” said FDI president Kathryn Kell. “This guideline will certainly be a valuable resource for all dental practitioners.”

“We are very supportive of FDI’s mission of leading the world to optimal oral health. At Sunstar, we always strive to help people everywhere achieve better health and enhance their quality of life,” said Richard McMahon, president of the Oral Care Company and a Sunstar Group representative. “This collaboration with FDI allows us to bring light to a serious disease and contribute toward its management.”

The World Health Organization reports more than 450,000 new cases of oral cancer globally each year, making it one of the 10 most common cancers worldwide. It is caused primarily by tobacco and alcohol use, though the human papillomavirus is a growing risk factor.

FDI notes that oral health professionals are in a strong position to screen high-risk patients for early signs of oral cancer through thorough and routine examinations. Early diagnosis greatly improves these patients’ chances for survival.
