The global dental handpiece market will reach $1.429 billion by 2019, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 5%, according to Technavio.
Specifically, air-driven handpieces will experience moderate growth through 2019 and account for the largest share of the overall market. In 2014, for example, they represented 68% of all handpieces.
The aging population and increases in oral diseases are driving this growth. Also, air-driven handpieces have benefitted from advanced brushless motors and a variety of contra-angle attachments.
“North America is dominating the global air-driven handpiece market, followed by Europe, because these regions have a well-established medical devices industry,” said Barath Palada, a lead analyst at Technavio for orthopedics and general medical devices.
“Also, emerging countries in the Asia-Pacific region like China and India are expected to witness a significant growth rate because of a rise in disposable income and development of healthcare infrastructure,” Palada said.
Electric handpieces also will see steady growth from $248.6 million in 2014 to $320.3 million in 2019 to take the second largest share of the overall market. Their greater than 5% CAGR will be enabled by improvements in torque, design, and materials in both North America and emerging markets.
“The trend toward electric handpieces was first started in Europe,” Palada said. “The primary reasons driving these devices’ popularity are the functionality and ease of installation and greater efficiency in terms of usage.”
Hybrid handpieces use electric and air technologies for greater efficiency to reduce chairside time in removing hard tissue, and for less weight. They held 10% of the global market in 2014 and are expected to reach $159.4 million by 2019, growing at a 7% CAGR.
Technavio based these forecasts on primary and secondary research techniques involving bottom-up and top-down approaches, using in-house market modeling tools and proprietary databases.
The company then corroborated its data with market participants such as vendors, service providers, distributors, resellers, and end users. For more information, see “Global Dental Handpieces Market 2015-2019.”
