Kevin Henner, D.M.D., of Long Island took office on August 14, 2021, as the 141st president of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA).
In his incoming president address to NYSDA members, Dr. Henner acknowledged how events that transpired over the past year truly captured the value of organized dentistry. He also highlighted the importance of working together to present a a unified voice to mold the future of the dental profession.
“In my new role, I look forward to unifying a diverse and inclusive membership by engaging both new and existing members and redefining the meaning of ‘active’ membership. This goal will take a concerted effort across the entire organization, where communication and participation are essential.”
He added, “By guiding and helping each other achieve professional success, every member holds a personal stake in our efforts. Activating an engaged membership not only makes us better professionals, it inherently strengthens our values, our reputation and, ultimately, the ability to do our job correctly.”
Dr. Henner is a general dentist with a practice in Deer Park on Long Island. He has served as chairof the Suffolk County Ethics Committee, the NYSDA Council on Ethics and the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws & Judicial Affairs and as an ethics and risk management instructor and ethics lecturer at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Henner is a graduate of Hobart & William Smith College and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
In addition to Dr. Henner, new and returning NYSDA officers and trustees were installed during proceedings of the House of Delegates meeting.
Dr. James Galati, president-elect, is in private practice in Clifton Park, NY. He also works part-time at an Article 28 facility in Albany, NY, serving the less fortunate. Dr. Galati is a graduate of the University of Maryland and Georgetown University School of Dentistry, graduating second in his class. He completed a GPR program at Albany Medical Center.
Dr. Anthony M. Cuomo, vice president, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He is in practice with his son, Christopher, at Northeast Implant & Oral Surgery in Carmel and Danbury, CT. Dr. Cuomo is a graduate of Fordham University and New York University College of Dentistry. He did his postdoctoral training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Lincoln Hospital in south Bronx.
Dr. Frank Barnashuk, secretary-treasurer, is clinical assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. A general dentist, he was in private practice in Western New York for 27 years before moving into academia. Dr. Barnashuk is a graduate of Canisius College and the UB School of Dental Medicine. He completed his general practice residency at Buffalo General Hospital.
