ANNAPOLIS, MD—January 8, 2013—Dr. Harold Jaffe, Associate Director for Science, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and one of the world’s leading authorities on HIV/AIDS, will headline the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) 2013 Symposium as the speaker for the Dr. John S. Zapp Memorial Lecture. Dr. Jaffe will give the keynote address, entitled “The Early AIDS Epidemic in the United States: Views from Hollywood and Atlanta.”

Established in 2006, the Dr. John Zapp Memorial Lecture’s purpose is to build bridges for global leaders to promote the exchange of knowledge regarding infection and safety for dental patients and providers.

“Dr. Jaffe is not only a global expert on HIV and infectious disease transmission but he has been instrumental in the development of policies and practices which have saved countless lives and improved the quality of life for people worldwide,” said Dr. Don Marianos, Chairman of the OSAP Foundation. “His perspective on the Press and Science is informed by his personal experiences on the front lines of cutting edge science and policy development and his unique perspective has appeared on the pages of the New York Times and Science to 60 Minutes.”

During his distinguished career, Dr. Jaffe led the first national case-control study to discover the risk factors for the emerging AIDS disease. For more than 20 years, he held leadership positions in the Central for Disease Control’s HIV/AIDS program and served as director of the National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention. His work was depicted in the Emmy Award winning film, And The Band Played On.

Dr. Jaffe serves as a Friend of OSAP, member of the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and has been a fellow of the UK Faculty of Public Health. His interests are focused on HIV/AIDS and global health research.

The annual OSAP symposium is a must-attend conference for those in the oral healthcare field. The theme of the 2013 event, which takes place June 13-15 in San Diego, is Charting a Course for Infection Prevention & Safety. Hosted at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa & Marina, the program is designed to present cutting-edge information, skill-building sessions and numerous opportunities to learn, share and grow.

The symposium will allow participants to navigate current changes and emerging issues in science, technology, guidelines, regulations, policies, practices and products; explore connections, resources and tools to optimize compliance and advance a culture of safety throughout healthcare.

The symposium welcomes oral healthcare educators and consultants, risk management professionals, public health professionals, policy makers in disease control and safety, infection control coordinators, sales and marketing professionals and scientists.
