Nobel Biocare proudly takes its place at one of the largest dental gatherings in the world, the 35th International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany, 12–16 March. The popularity and tradition behind this event makes it a prime opportunity to announce the endowment of FOR, the Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation. FOR, which will be led by the most renowned scholars in oral rehabilitation, will be a landmark in Nobel Biocare’s history and commitment to training, education, science and humanitarian engagement. Additionally at IDS, Nobel Biocare is announcing exciting upcoming CAD/CAM developments to NobelProcera including a new second-generation scanner and open access partnership with 3Shape.

Nobel Biocare is a focused and specialized leader in implant-based dental restorations – including implant systems, high-precision individualized prosthetics, CAD/CAM, diagnostics, treatment planning and guided surgery – that provides support to customers throughout their professional and practice development. Nobel Biocare offers comprehensive education programs to support the development of dental professionals to help them become more efficient and effective in their work. The sponsorship of the new Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation is an extension of this strong emphasis on training and education and underscores the future contributions Nobel Biocare plans to make to the oral health community.

Nobel Biocare is a CAD/CAM pioneer as the first to offer fully-automated industrial CAD/CAM dental prosthetic production. The NobelProcera CAD/CAM system is a leader in innovative technology, materials and products delivering ready-to-use restorations with outstanding quality. The announcements of a new NobelProcera 2G Scanner and an open access partnership with 3Shape for NobelProcera Abutments, both to be launched later this year, offer even more access to superior products and solutions that help dental professionals treat more patients better.

The patient is at the forefront of Nobel Biocare’s mission, “Designing for Life,” an ambition to improve every patient’s quality of life with superior products and solutions designed to give functional and natural-looking tooth restorations that aspire to last a lifetime. For each core step of the patient treatment workflow – diagnostics and treatment planning, surgery, prosthetic restoration and post-treatment care – Nobel Biocare provides superior products and solutions to ensure maximum treatment safety, patient comfort and long-term success.

At Nobel Biocare, product innovation is again taking the lead and driving the organization to fulfill its mission. Additionally, there is also the firm belief that continuing education and training on its superior products and solutions are not only key to a dental professional’s success, but are essential to enhancing a patient’s experience, treatment outcome and ultimately, quality of life.

Nobel Biocare will establish the Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation (FOR) as a scholar-led, international initiative to promote oral healthcare and humanitarian leadership
The Foundation for Oral Rehabilitation builds on Nobel Biocare’s strong history and commitment to science and education. “Our mission is to achieve effective worldwide patient care through scholarship and humanitarian engagement,” according to George Zarb, who will be the chairman of the foundation. The official inauguration of FOR will take place at the Nobel Biocare Global Symposium in New York, 20-23 June. FOR will be organized into three sections: FOR Education, FOR Science and FOR Humanity and will be led by a board of trustees consisting of world-renowned clinicians and scholars.

Upcoming NobelProcera® 2G Scanner with direct access to unrivaled prosthetic solutions
The upcoming second-generation NobelProcera 2G Scanner builds on the more than 25 years of CAD/CAM experience behind all NobelProcera solutions and tops its predecessor which has already proven to be an extremely accurate scanner on the dental market. [1] The new scanner has a similar look to the original with exciting new elements including advanced automation features which are designed to increase productivity. Existing users of the NobelProcera Scanner will be able to upgrade their current scanner to the new 2G version which will be available later this year.

New partnership with 3Shape™ will offer open access to NobelProcera® Abutments
Later this year, users of the 3Shape Dental System will be able to integrate their system to gain access to the unrivaled quality of NobelProcera Abutments in zirconia and titanium for both Nobel Biocare and other major implant systems. After integrating with NobelProcera, 3Shape users simply maintain their current workflow of scanning and designing using the 3Shape Dental System to access the extensive global production network of NobelProcera. Interested 3Shape users should contact Nobel Biocare to obtain the required interface file. Availability may depend on the version in use and which 3Shape Partner has provided the Dental System.

Latest features reaffirm NobelClinician™ Software is the key to successful implant treatments
NobelClinician provides precise implant planning options for predictable outcomes and is a very effective visual communication tool. As the first diagnostics and treatment planning software available for both Mac OS® X and Windows®, NobelClinician serves an increasing demand in the dental community as dental professionals frequently also use Apple® devices in their dental practices.

The latest version of NobelClinician Software significantly enhances diagnostic capabilities through a new 3D rendering technology called volume rendering. Clinicians can now instantly see below the surface of 3D bone models from (CB)CT patient scans and immediately identify and further inspect internal anatomical structures like tooth roots or previously-planned implants while treatment planning.

Dental professionals can now also use NobelClinician to import 2D images – like existing pre- and post-operative dental x-rays or clinical patient pictures (e.g. patient’s smile, intraoral clinical images, etc.) – and visualize them next to the 3D view. This allows the dental professional to be even closer to the real situation while virtually planning or discussing in an interdisciplinary treatment team and also considering availability of bone and prosthetic needs. All new views and pictures are fully integrated into the clinical report. Treatment scenarios can be shared securely and hassle-free through the NobelConnect collaboration feature to align computers within the practice or with other treating team members at different geographical locations.

The new and innovative NobelClinician Communicator iPad® app gives dental professionals a convenient platform to present and effectively communicate NobelClinician treatment plans to their patients. This revolutionary iPad® app can be used in a comfortable setting to easily display selected clinical pictures, x-rays and the patient’s 2D or 3D images for helping them to understand their treatment plan. The dental professional can use any iPad® with the NobelClinician Communicator app to open their NobelClinician patient presentations by just logging in with a NobelClinician user account. Additionally, the patient can confirm having seen and studied the information on the treatment flow by signing off on the iPad® presentation. The patient’s iPad®presentation is securely stored on the online NobelConnect space ensuring no information will be lost.

New NobelReplace® Conical Connection and Replace Select™ implants increase treatment flexibility
The line extension of partially machined collar implants featuring the new NobelReplace Conical Connection PMC and Replace Select Tapered PMC ensures that the original tapered implant system provides total patient treatment flexibility. No matter the patient requirements or clinician preference, NobelReplace and Replace Select represent one system for all clinical needs. The new NobelReplace Conical Connection PMC adds an additional option to the original with a 0.75 mm machined collar. NobelReplace Conical Connection combines the original tapered implant body with a sealed conical connection to offer dental professionals an esthetic solution for all indications. The body of all NobelReplace and Replace Select implants mimics the shape of a natural tooth root and is designed for high initial stability in all loading protocols including Immediate Function.

Replace Select Tapered – the safe, reliable and easy-to-use implant with the internal tri-channel connection – now offers two collar options for different clinical needs and treatment preferences. The original Replace Select Tapered has been available with a 1.5 mm machined collar for tissue-level restorations and the new Replace Select Tapered PMC is available with a 0.75 mm machined collar. The micro-roughness of the machined collar and abutment surface are similar to natural tooth enamel (Ra 0.3–0.5). These harmonious surface conditions promote optimal soft tissue attachment and a seal by the junctional epithelium for healthy and highly esthetic results.

Innovative new features added to the iPad®-operated OsseoCare™ Pro drill motor
The iPad®-operated OsseoCare Pro drill motor has added some new and innovative features to the latest application update now available in the Apple® App Store. New customizable drilling protocols allow users to create and save their own drilling protocols by changing or adding steps – both for Nobel Biocare and other implant systems. Additionally, OsseoCare Pro users can now use their handpiece of choice as well as switching between different contra-angles and handpiece ratios during surgery. Also, a new note-taking feature allows users to keep a more effective overview of surgery with the ability to add notes before, during and after surgery which can also be included in the reporting feature.

The intuitive user interface of the OsseoCare Pro combined with unique handling features provides clinicians and their patients with high treatment efficiency and security. Available free of charge from the Apple® App Store, the OsseoCare Pro application delivers highly user-friendly operations and opens up numerous avenues in terms of customization options.

New options for NobelProcera® Abutments on Biomet 3i™, Camlog® and Zimmer® implant platforms
The latest additions to the assortment of third-party NobelProcera Abutments provides affordable and high-quality options that pair patient needs with individual products. In addition to the existing third-party NobelProcera Abutments for Straumann, Astra Tech and Thommen – a whole new range of NobelProcera Abutments on Biomet 3i, Camlog and Zimmer implant platforms are now available. All NobelProcera Abutments are meticulously developed, verified, and validated to meet engineering requirements and user needs.

More restorative flexibility with NobelProcera® Implant Bars on Straumann® implant platforms
NobelProcera users can gain a significant competitive edge in expanding their business with the new in-lab scanning of NobelProcera Implant Bar Overdenture for Straumann implant platforms. NobelProcera Implant Bars for Straumann Standard/Standard Plus and Bone Level allow for even more restorative flexibility with precision engineering that supports basic to advanced cases. The extensive experience in high-end industrial manufacturing available with the global production network of NobelProcera, allows dental professionals to take advantage of a whole new range of implant restorative options for addressing patient needs.

The NobelProcera Implant Bar Overdenture for Straumann implant platforms has been tested with a new 3D fit assessment to verify the high precision of fit of NobelProcera Implant Bars on Straumann implant platforms. The method is used to confirm precision of fit in order to reduce mechanical complications and ensure longevity which is particularly relevant when developing CAD/CAM-generated dental implant substructures.[2]

Immediately loaded NobelActive® implants display a high cumulative survival rate in recent study
Since its launch five years ago, NobelActive has attracted new users at a pace the dental industry has not seen before – recently passing 1,000,000 NobelActive implants placed in patients worldwide. The most recent addition, NobelActive 3.0, provides narrow-fitting implant solutions and is specifically designed for the replacement of single-unit maxillary lateral incisors as well as mandibular lateral and central incisors.

A new clinical study with three years of follow-up data confirms the exceptional performance of NobelActive. The study recently published in the European Journal of Oral Implantology entitled, “Comparison of variable-thread tapered implant designs to a standard tapered implant design after immediate loading. A 3-year multi-centre randomised controlled trial” aimed to verify whether immediate loading could be applied with NobelActive while achieving the same stable marginal bone levels and soft tissue healing as with the well-documented NobelReplace Tapered implant. After three years, the cumulative survival rate was 96–97%. Marginal bone levels were measured on intraoral radiographs and, after initial bone remodeling, demonstrated stable or improving levels during the second and third year. The mean papilla score increased significantly in all treatment groups.[3]
