New York University (NYU) School of Medicine has announced that it will offer a scholarship to cover tuition for every new, current, and future medical student. All students entered into the MD degree program are eligible regardless of financial need or academic performance. This year’s tuition cost is over $55,000.1

“The debt can scare people away. One of those individuals could be the one to find a cure for cancer,” said Rafael Rivera, MD, MBA, associate dean for admission and financial aid. “For us, it’s important to have the best applicant pool possible and society deserves nothing less.”1

“Our goal was to raise enough money to enable students to graduate with as little debt as possible,” said Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health.1

University officials have worked for more than a decade to generate adequate funding to establish this permanent scholarship endowment. Students will still be responsible to cover room and board, as well as incidental personal expenses.

The positive implications of NYU’s actions as a model for other healthcare educational programs cannot be overstated. These steps may be the initiation of game-changing paradigms throughout the healthcare professions.
