The global periodontal therapeutics market totaled $259.34 million in 2016 and will reach $511.76 million by 2023, increasing at a 10.2% compound annual growth rate, according to Research and Markets.

The analysis firm attributed this growth to the increasing pool of diabetic patients, the rising prevalence of periodontal disorders, and surging research into therapeutic technologies. However, Research and Markets notes, a lack of favorable reimbursement policies in various countries may limit the market’s growth.

Systemic antibiotics command the largest share of the market and will continue to do so through the forecast period, the company reports, due to high market penetration stemming from product affordability. Local antibiotics held the second largest share, and Research and Markets believes they will see faster growth because of their reduced potential for resistant bacteria and fewer side effects.

North America saw the largest market share due to increased healthcare expenditures leading to increased demand for better oral healthcare therapeutics, though Research and Markets predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will see a higher compound annual growth rate because of its population growth.
