The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is warning of a phone scam where the caller claims to be from the Illinois Board of Dentistry. The scammer spoofs the call number to make it appear like it is from one of the department’s numbers (217-785-0800). At least one call has been reported in Illinois already, and the Iowa Dental Board has reported a similar scam.
The Board of Dentistry advises that it will never call anyone and demand money or information. If people receive calls like this, they should hang up immediately. Also, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation advises people never to give their credit card number or personal identifying information over the phone if they did not initiate the call. Finally, it says, people should be wary of callers who try to intimidate them into making a quick decision or “act immediately.”
