The ITO Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation D Function electrical muscle stimulator, which is designed to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and associated pain, has received 510(k) clearance by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The D Function is equipped with multiple treatment modes to relieve muscle spasms and help maintain balance and control of the nerves and muscles around the head and neck. Its highly functional waveforms, ITO said, provides relaxation and relief from pain. The stimulation also is easy on the skin, ITO continued, so patients can receive treatment in comfort.

The palm-sized device provides safe default output intensity to ensure safety, single-use electrode operation to ensure hygiene, and dual channels with flexible control settings to treat two areas simultaneously.

Also, the D Function can be used for pre-treatment in balancing oral muscles and as co-treatment with conventional TMJ disorder interventions such as splint therapy. Additional applications include muscle re-education and blood flow increase.
