MedTech Breakthrough has named Align Technology’s iTero Element 5D Imaging System the Best New Technology Solution for Dentistry as part of its fourth annual awards program.
The iTero Element 5D is the first integrated dental imaging system that simultaneously records 3-D intraoral optical impressions, 2-D color images, and near-infrared images (NIRI), according to Align Technology. It also completes full-arch scans of enamel and dentin in 60 seconds without harmful radiation, Align said, aiding in the detection of interproximal caries.
Through its visualization tools, the company added, patients can see and better understand their current dental health issues, their treatment plan options, and simulated outcomes directly on screen at the dentist’s office, enabling education and compliance during treatment, and an overall better patient experience, Align Technology said.
“Given the importance of oral health to everyone’s overall health, it’s not surprising that dental technologies are an important component of the larger MedTech Breakthrough category,” said James Johnson, managing director of MedTech Breakthrough, which is an independent market intelligence organization. “Align is a strong leader in the dental technology space, and we recognize its ‘breakthrough’ dental imaging platform for dentists and orthodontists.”
The MedTech Breakthrough Awards honor excellence and recognize innovation, hard work, and success in a range of health and medical technology categories including robotics, clinical administration, telehealth, patient engagement, electronic health records, mobile health, medical devices, medical data, and other areas. This year’s program saw more than 3,750 nominations from more than 15 countries.
“We are honored to receive the 2020 MedTech Breakthrough Award and believe it is a powerful testament to the innovative technology and overall results the iTero platform delivers to doctors and their patients,” said Yuval Shaked, senior vice president and managing director, iTero scanner and services businesses at Align Technology.
“Prior to the iTero Element 5D launch, separate caries detection devices existed as a complement to x-rays and required practitioners to make additional investments on top of their existing x-ray technology and created inefficient chairside workflows. By seamlessly combining three key scanning technologies—3-D optical impressions, 2-D oral color photos, and NIRI—into one, single integrated scan, the iTero Element 5D increases the efficiency and interconnectedness of the dentists’ workflow dramatically,” Shaked said.
