The PowerPlus Mouthguard is designed to maximize athletic safety and performance. Developed by a dentist, it is custom-fit to provide uniquely targeted protection while placing the jaw in the “PowerPlus” position, increasing strength and protecting the brain from impact injury. According to the company, it is the only mouthguard proven to significantly reduce incidents of concussions in athletes.

The PowerPlus improves isokinetic strength in flexion for both the upper and lower body while placing the jaw in optimal maxilla-mandibular spacing that facilitates increased response time and balance, the company reports. Also, it positions the jaw to reduce g-forces that normally are delivered to the skull and brain via physical impacts, reducing concussions and dental injuries. It lets athletes breathe and speak clearly without compromising protection as well.

“Results from a study on human subjects reported in the Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry showed the importance of placing the jaw in the optimal, physiologic position in order to drastically reduce the incidents of concussions. Similarly, in an ongoing concussion field study that has grown to over 4,000 athletes wearing the medically patented PowerPlus Mouthguard, results have shown the incidents of concussions reduced to 0.20%,” said Michael Hutchison, DDS, company founder and inventor of the PowerPlus Mouthguard.

“This study includes athletes at all levels, from professional to high school, and represents multiple sports including male and female teams in football, hockey, basketball, as well as soccer and MMA,” said Hutchison. “This is truly a breakthrough in concussion-lowering technology.”

The PowerPlus Mouthguard is customized for each user in a three-step process. It comes with a PowerPlus Position gauge that measures the athlete’s unique bite position. After this position is determined, it is then locked in with or without a fitting, power-wafer insert by heating the mouthguard in boiling water before placing the guard in the mouth to finalize the perfect, individualized fit.

“PowerPlus is the only medically patented mouthguard that places the athlete’s jaw in the optimum, physiologic position. This is why athletes experienced marked improvement in breathing, strength, balance, and performance in addition to the protection from concussive forces,” said Michael Hott, PowerPlus Mouthguard executive vice president. “Traditional mouthguards worn on the upper teeth were originally designed to prevent chipped teeth and have virtually no other performance or protective purpose.”

“The season we did not fit our kids with a PowerPlus Mouthguard, we had four concussions. Two kids had to sit out the rest of the season. The following two seasons, we had all our kids wearing the PowerPlus, and we have not had a single concussion for two seasons now. In addition, we went 31-1 and won back-to-back state championships,” said Whitney Keeling, head football coach at Waskom High School in Waskom, Texas.
