Latex Allergies

Many people have safe contact with products containing latex each day, but some susceptible individuals can develop hypersensitivity, with allergic reactions, to the proteins derived from natural rubber latex. Normally, latex allergies develop following repeated exposure to products that contain natural rubber latex. Powder used on latex gloves can absorb latex proteins and increase exposure to latex. Also, during removal of gloves the powder can become airborne and contact eyes, noses, or mouths.

Dental personnel and patients who are constantly exposed to latex examination or surgical gloves and other latex-based healthcare products are at a high risk for allergies. Minor symptoms in hypersensitive individuals may include hives or nasal congestion, and severe cases may result in anaphylaxis. It is important to pay particular attention to latex exposure in the dental office. Patients should be advised to inform the office about any symptoms so medical records can be updated and appropriate precautions taken for each dental visit.
