Triodent was founded in 2003 by dentist and inventor Simon McDonald with the aim of manufacturing products that made the dentist’s job easier with better outcomes for the patient. Dr McDonald’s first product was the Tri-Clip. He followed this in 2005 with the V-Ring—the first retainer ring with V-shaped tines and the first made from Ni-Ti. The V-Ring was named Top Matrix System by The Dental Advisor in 2008.
In May 2008, Triodent launched the next generation of V-Ring, the V3, and in 2009 that too was named Top Matrix System by The Dental Advisor, a title it won again in 2010 and 2011. It was also named top matrix system for 2009 by Reality and won Dentaltown’s Townie Choice Award in 2009 and 2010.
Triodent was named New Zealand’s fastest-growing manufacturer in 2008, and was one of the top 150 fastest-growing technology companies that year in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2009, Triodent was named top exporter to the United States in its category at the American Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand Export Awards, and in the New Zealand International Business Awards the company was named Best User of Research and Development.
