Two award-winning architectural firms with extensive track records planning and designing animal and human healthcare facilities across the country have joined forces to create one of the largest companies of its kind, providing clients with an unrivaled depth of expertise and personalized service.
Effective April 14, 2023, M.D. Architects, P.C. (MDA), with locations in Indianapolis and Boston, and Architectural Werks, Inc. (AWI), based in Seattle, now operate under the MDA name, providing architectural design services for veterinary clinics, specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals, as well as human outpatient surgery centers, medical facilities and dental clinics nationwide.
Established in 2000, M.D. Architects was created to design human healthcare environments and ultimately expanded into animal healthcare in 2005. The firm was named one of the top 25 fastest-growing companies in Indianapolis by the Indianapolis Business Journal in 2023, has been recognized as one of Indiana’s best places to work for many years, and was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2021 dvm360 Veterinary Hospital Design Competition.
Since 1957, AWI has skillfully designed over 550 animal healthcare practices and hundreds of human healthcare facilities. They’ve continued to grow their design expertise of human dental clinics, ambulatory surgical centers, and imaging centers. AWI has earned national recognition and awards including the IIDA 2021 People’s Choice Award for Design, and the Merit Award in the dvm360 Hospital Design Competition.
“Demand for innovative and sustainable architectural services, particularly in the animal healthcare field, has grown exponentially in the last decade; in fact, the investment community predicts the pet care industry will triple over the next ten years,” says Rick Renschen, AIA, NCARB, founder and president of M.D. Architects. “With AWI joining us, MDA is growing into an even greater organization. We are honored to provide our clients with even more outstanding talent and experience creating state-of-the-art animal care facilities.”
“Our companies have such similar and synergistic cultures that it’s as if we were made to be one firm,” says Franklin Ng, AIA, MCARB, an AWI principal who is a partner in the newly affiliated organization. “Now that we are one, our current and future clients will have an even greater level of service, along with unparalleled expertise and care, without losing the local feeling.”
Janet Monda, AIA, and Jeff Clark, AIA, ICC, AAHA, also principals in AWI, will retain similar positions in the new M.D. Architects organization.
M.D. Architects is privately held.
