Empowering Women Across the World
Dentistry, once considered a primarily male-dominated profession, has seen a remarkable shift in recent years. More and more women are entering the field, breaking down barriers and making significant contributions to the dental industry. Dr. Effie Habsha created Women in Dentistry: Work. Life. Balance. (WiD) in 2010 with the aim of elevating, educating, and empowering all women in the field. After graduating from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Dr. Habsha began her career as a prosthodontist in Toronto. She continues to expand her learning and contributions to the dental field as an adjunct assistant professor at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester, an associate in dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto and other affiliations. She also lectures nationally and internationally on numerous prosthodontic topics.
Although Dr. Habsha has a lot on her plate, she makes time for things she is passionate about, such as the empowerment of women in dentistry. Since founding WiD in 2010, she is overwhelmingly proud of how much this group has expanded worldwide throughout the years. Dedicated to bringing together women in the dental field to network, mentor, share, and learn from each other’s unique perspectives, these goals have been achieved with chapters around the world. This network welcomes dentists, dental specialists, hygienists, assistants, office administrators, denturists, lab technicians, and women in the corporate dental industry who share a passion for their respective fields. With regular events and initiatives from webinars, annual symposiums, workshops, biannual journals, and the mentorship program, knowledge related to the clinical, business, and balance side of dentistry continues to be shared to champion for all women in the dental profession.
WiD recently hosted its 13th Annual Symposium: Clinical Tips and Tricks for the Entire Dental Team with more than 300 attendees and 45 corporate sponsors. The next symposium will be held on April 4 to April 5, 2024, in Toronto, which will include several hands-on workshops and, as always, fantastic lectures from world-renowned speakers. The future of WiD remains bright with the formation and strengthening of multiple chapters, connections, and friendships.
